The 11th Chengdu Motor Show (CDMS 2008) was successfully completed on September 26 at New International Convention & Exposition Center Chengdu Century City. The results from CDMS 2008 were extremely positive. On the 90,000 show area (2007: 80,000 sqm), the 352,600 visitors far exceeded the organizers’ goals and expectations, up 13.7% from last edition. The Show received a very pleased response from the media and enjoyed a heavy attendance by the professionals and general public, and the exhibitors were highly satisfied.
World renowned automakers sparkling at the show
Overshadowed by the catastrophic 5.12 Wenchuan earthquake, the holding place – New International Convention & Exposition Center Chengdu Century City is physically intact, even receiving record-high interest from automakers. Overseas companies again served as highlight on the event with Japan and Germany, the two leading auto sales nations, showcasing their high-class vehicles respectively at the national pavilion. This year, visitors had a taste of full-line German vehicles: VW Import Car, Skoda, Shanghai VW, Faw-VW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW while hall 6 had such Japanese vehicles as Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, Dongfeng Honda, Dongfeng Nissan, Faw Toyota, Guangzhou Toyota and Guangzhou Honda. In addition, a variety of foreign automakers enlarged their display size: all of VW, Benz and Audi have booked some 1,000 sqm booth respectively. At the same time, Chinese automakers are by no means dwarfed: home-born companies like Chery and BYD occupied large proportion at the international hall, and Chery booked a 1000-sqm-pavillion. Such a rich array of famous companies has brought an orgy to the audience.
James Fu, General Manager of Hannover Fairs China stated, ’Chengdu, with high-rank consumption capacity, boasts an intensive radiation to the whole Southwest China. Well located in the mid-west part, it has also become the most developed city for hosting fairs in that region. Backed up this, Chengdu will no doubt be a bull’s eye in China’s car market and ideal place for holding exhibitions.’
A large attendance from the visitors, highly satisfied exhibitors
This year, total 170 exhibitors brought with them 450 vehicles on display, and most of them are world renowned automakers like Rolls-Royce, Porsche, BMW, Peugeot, Audi, etc. The results from a survey conducted around the stands by the organizer showed that all of the exhibitors were very satisfied with the quality of the 11th Chengdu Motor Show. Further, a large number of visitors have expressed their intentions to buy new cars at the Show or soon after. Statistics from the organizers showed that till the last day of the show Sep. 26, on-site vehicle dealing result reported a growth of 62% to 1749 vehicles from last year’s 1077 vehicles. Among them luxury vehicles accounts 195, mid-high vehicle 1119, economy vehicle 435.
Meanwhile, the goal of 350,000 visitors was well exceeded with a final total of 352,600 entries, in spite of the three continuous rainy days. The peak comes on Sep. 20, the second day of the show, witnessing a record-breaking turnout of 70,000 entries. Once again, the professionals and public demonstrated their fascination with and passion for automobiles and the related new technological developments on display.
Very extensive and positive coverage by the media
Over 800 representatives from the print, audio-visual, and electronic media came from around the world, which is another new record. The coverage of the Show was very broad and extremely positive: many domestic main-stream media like CCTV 1, CCTV 2, CCTV5, CCTV News, Xinhua News agency, Economic Daily, China Trade News, China Business Herald, China Youth Daily, Nanfang Daily, Chengdu Business Daily, West China Metropolis Daily, Sina, Sohu, autohome, PCAUTO, reported the show on the scene. Even more the world reputed media giants like Dow Jones, ISI, Google also put intensive coverage on the motor show. All of them confirmed the importance of Chengdu Motor Show as the Top 4 in China.
Chengdu Motor Show: an excellent rating
With an average rating of 8 out of 10, visitor rating of Chengdu Motor Show’s infrastructure is very positive and is consistent compared to previous surveys. Improvements requested included better sign posting, an improved security guard system, and better parking arrangements. The electronic ticket system, the special offers from the local public transportation, and the parking shuttle service were highly valued.
Filled with excitement and brilliance, CDMS has become a must-to-attend festival to its visitors. Apart from the vehicles displayed on site, a series of activities together with model performances also helped to create a distinct sensual experience for visitors. A bunch of concurrent activities such as ’2008 Chengdu Motor Board’, ’Chengdu Auto Market Summit’, the wecker show, ’Creative Design Competition for Vehicle Pictorial Poster’ etc added festival tinge to the event.
The 2009 edition will take place from the 17th through the 23rd of September at New International Convention and Exposition Center Chengdu Century City.
