Fuji Xerox (China) Ltd opened a factory to recycle its own printers, copycat models and related components in Suzhou, the Japanese-based document equipment vendor said yesterday.
In doing so, it has joined the growing environmentally friendly and energy-efficient "green IT" trend.
The joint venture between Fuji and Xerox invested 650 million yen (US$5.98 million) into the 7,500 square-meter factory, called Fuji Xerox Eco-Manufacturing (Suzhou) Co Ltd. It is designed to recycle 15,000 devices and 500,000 drum cartridges annually.
In its initial operation in 2008, the factory is expected to process 4,000 devices and 120,000 cartridges. The capacity will hit 10,000 and 400,000 in 2010.
The used printers and components will be disassembled and separated into steel, aluminum and glass, among others. On average, 96 percent of an office device can be reused.
"The warming climate and electronic waste have become concerns of the global society. Recycling will bring great value to both enterprises and society," Tadahito Yamamoto, the company's president, said.
Previously, Fuji Xerox only operated recycling facilities in Japan and Thailand for the Asia Pacific market. Fuji Xerox's move is in line with the Chinese government's policy to develop sustainable economic growth with strict environmental protection, industry insiders said.
Green IT will become more and more popular in China, this year, according to US-based IT research firm International Data Corp.
