U.S. carrier Continental Airlines said Wednesday it will charge a 50-U.S. dollar fee for the second checked bag on trans-Atlantic flights, joining its competitors in imposing the new fee.
The new charge applies to travelers on all flights operated by Continental Airlines between the United States and Europe, and takes effect for tickets purchased Thursday for travel on or after Sept. 15, the Houston-based carrier said in a statement.
The first checked bag will remain free, it said.
Delta Air Lines, the world's largest carrier, added a 50-dollar fee for the second checked bag on trans-Atlantic routes in July, and American Airlines followed suit last week. US Airways also announced similar 50-dollar fees.
Baggage and other fees have become more important because demand has declined due to the recession and carrier have to slash fares to lure travelers, analysts have said.
